Payette Lake Protective League - watershed conservation plan
Big Payette Lake is a high elevation, glacial lake of remarkable purity; it is bordered for many of its 22 mile shoreline by protected lands. McCall and the lake have been a resort community for over 100 years with may generations of families coming to the same cabins for all that time.
As the first part of a long-term plan to develop a comprehensive set of tools to preserve the lake and the quality of experience that old time and newly arrived visitor expect, ARC has been hired to development an assessment of the lake, its biology and current and potential future threats. Tasks have included a public interview program that will give an anecdotal picture of how people feel about the lake, the lake-based community and why the come to McCall. A literature survey has been completed to quantify the lakes biological community and to identify potential sources of pollution. Particularly, it assesses the pollution caused by recreational watercraft, focusing on two-stroke engines used by sailboats, runabouts and jet skis. A final report for this phase, Personal Watercraft and Powerboat Use on Big Payette Lake, June 2005, makes recommendations for action and details additional tasks necessary to complete the preservation plan.
